FSALAGURA, SAUL, AND DONALD F. SMITH. Role of LiCZ and entkonmental stimuli on general&d learned aversion to NaCl in th rat. A m. J+ Physiul. 219(5): 1231-1234. 1970.-Following the ing estion of a poisonous 0.12 M LiCl solution, rats learned to avoid an equimolar NaCl solution. This acquired aversion to NaCl was overcome most rapidly and to a greater degree when a physiological need for both water and sodium was produced by a subcutaneous injection of formalin. The aversion was also overcome when a need for water was produced by either water deprivation or a subcutaneous polyethylene glycol injection, or when a need for sodium was produced by adrenalectomy. Furthermore, a change of illumination from light to dark increased NaCl consumption, while the reverse was observed when illumination was changed from dark to light. These results demonstrate that external stimuli, such as lighting conditions, and internal stimuli, such as those arising from a physiological need for either sodium or water or both, can influence the acquired fluid preference behavior of rats.

Cue Enhancement of Lithium-chloride-induced Mutton/sheep Aversions in Coyotes
In an enclosure-type study, I investigated the use of odor, auditory, and visual cues to enhance lithium-chloride (LiCl)induced prey aversion in coyotes (Canis latrans). Eight adult, male, wild-caught coyotes that killed 2 adult sheep during successive daily, 1 -hr trials were assigned to LiCland sodium-chloride (NaCl)-bait groups. The 4 LiCl-bait coyotes were sequentially presented with leg-of...
متن کاملA high-throughput method to measure NaCl and acid taste thresholds in mice.
To develop a technique suitable for measuring NaCl taste thresholds in genetic studies, we conducted a series of experiments with outbred CD-1 mice using conditioned taste aversion (CTA) and two-bottle preference tests. In Experiment 1, we compared conditioning procedures involving either oral self-administration of LiCl or pairing NaCl intake with LiCl injections and found that thresholds were...
متن کاملRapid stimulus-bound suppression of intake in response to an intraduodenal nonnutritive sweetener after training with nutritive sugars predicting malaise.
In a previous report (Schier et al., Am J Physiol Regul Integr Comp Physiol 301: R1557-R1568, 2011), we demonstrated with a new behavioral procedure that rats exhibit stimulus-bound suppression of intake in response to an intraduodenal (ID) bitter tastant predicting subsequent malaise. With the use of the same modified taste aversion procedure, the present experiments evaluated whether the swee...
متن کاملTemporal and qualitative dynamics of conditioned taste aversion processing: combined generalization testing and licking microstructure analysis.
The pattern of licking microstructure during various phases of a conditioned taste aversion (CTA) was evaluated. In Experiment 1, rats ingested lithium chloride (LiCl) for 3 trials and were then offered sodium chloride (NaCl) or sucrose on 3 trials. A CTA to LiCl developed and generalized to NaCl but not to sucrose. CTA intake suppression was characterized by reductions in burst size, average i...
متن کاملLesions of the central nucleus of the amygdala. I: Effects on taste reactivity, taste aversion learning and sodium appetite.
Bilateral damage to the central nucleus of the amygdala (CeAX) in the rat blunts need-induced NaCl intake and abolishes daily need-free NaCl intake when measured with a two-bottle test. Such a deficit could be the result of impaired taste function. To assess the taste function of the CeAX rat various taste stimuli were introduced directly into the oral cavity and taste-elicited oral motor respo...
